Description
We invite you to indulge deeply of Melian cuisine, wine and culture, combining 6 culinary encounters in 4 different villages with a visit to the island’s sole winery. Your destination angel and the hospitable locals you will meet along the way will open up a fascinating window into the traditional gastronomy and culture of Milos. At each stop, you will be introduced to a different island delicacy.
As you learn about how the heritage and history of Milos has contributed to its prized gastronomy, you will feel a closer connection with these islanders and a greater appreciation of the authentic Melian lifestyle and cuisine.
Before mass production overtook the world, there were family farms.
Our first stop is Pollonia; the gastronomic centre of Milos. Have you ever tried a pitaraki before? We will taste the local pitarakia, traditional cheese pie or tomato fritters , made with homemade sundried tomatoes, and gain an overview of the island’s cheese production. As we exit the village and pass by the ruins of Phylakopi and the volcanic cave of Papafragas, we’ll share with you the historic origins of Milos and its vast geological wealth.
We will drive across the island, from the north to the south, to reach Paliochori, one of the most renowned volcanic beaches of Milos. With a sulfuric smell, volcanic rock formations and warm currents, this is one of the most intriguing, yet popular, beaches of Milos. Here we will taste the unique volcanic food of Milos, with meals slow-cooked in the hot sand, courtesy of the geothermal energy of the soil!
On the way back to the north side of Milos, we will make a stop at Trypiti to enjoy the beautiful views over the mouth of the port and lay out a mini-picnic, preparing our own dakos salad with local Melian ingredients. Next up is Plaka, the picturesque capital of Milos, where you will not only taste wonderful homemade dishes and traditional Greek desserts, but also stroll through the colourful history of the capital of Milos. With buildings dating back to the 1400s and protected architectural heritage, Plaka remains the beating heart of Milos.
Whilst enjoying local flavours, you’ll hear about the historic highlights and legends of Milos, from Neolithic times to nowadays. We strongly advise that you save a little space for one more stop, as we return to Pollonia. Do you know what happens to the not-so-appealing watermelons on Milos? Acquaint your tastebuds with a local culinary legend: the delicious and one-of-a-kind watermelon pie and traditional koufeto dessert, offered in weddings, to ensure that the couple will have a sweet and prosperous life together.
The only winery of Milos is our final indulgence. The Konstantakis family has been cultivating the land of Pollonia for generations and their winery, located in a cave, might be small but it’s a life-affirming trip back in time and a true representation of the love and respect this family bears for their immensely drinkable products. It’s the kind of heartfelt approach that you’ll experience at every taste and turn in Milos on this unforgettable epicurean’s odyssey.
