Description
Trace the footsteps of the legendary Venus de Milo and follow the history of Milos through the ages as you soak up the island’s geological marvels. Let your destination angel guide you through the captivating heritage and culture of Milos, revealing local stories and myths along the way. Admire geology that will leave you awestruck as you delve into the culture of this unforgettable island. This complete experience is a top choice for those wishing to explore the greatest hits of Milos, like Sarakiniko, the Catacombs, Klima and Plaka, among others, as well as diving into the local way of life.
Let’s begin from the first capital of the island in Neolithic times: the village of Phylakopi, where we will visit the volcanic cave of Papafragas. This stop sets the pace of things to come: history and geology intertwined to create the unique culture of the people of Milos. Have you ever wondered what it might be like to walk on the moon?
We will continue next to Sarakiniko, the magnificent lunar landscape of Milos, forged from the ashes of the island’s volcanic activity. We will walk upon the blinding white rocks of Sarakiniko and watch the young bravely leaping off the white cliffs into the deep Aegean blue. After the blinding white of Sarakiniko, we will continue on to Adamas, the port of Milos, with a walk through the maze of tunnels that served as the WWII Bomb Shelter! An impressive, labyrinthine construction of twelve large chambers that branch off left and right of a central artery, below the settlement of Adamas. We will then retrace the rich history of Milos in Trypiti and Plaka, the heart of the community of Milos.
Awaiting you in Trypiti are the Catacombs of Milos, the ancient theatre and the Venus de Milo discovery point. Have you ever wondered what the acoustics are like in a theatre that was constructed almost 2,000 years ago? We will take a walk through the ancient structure and play with the sounds of our voices. Perched beneath this picturesque village is the ancient town of Klima, one of the most colourful fishing villages in Greece, inviting us to stroll along its picture-perfect seafront. We can’t miss the village of Mandrakia either. Both are lined with the brightly painted syrmata; the traditional fishermen boathouses, with the colourful wooden doors, where the fishermen spend their summers and time appears to have paused.
We will continue on to the beautiful beach of Fyropotamos, also decorated with syrmata, for more photos and the opportunity to jump into its beautiful waters. Let’s catch our breath in the authentic village of Triovasalos where you’ll sample the true lifestyle and pace of Milos with a leisurely drink and meze meal among locals at a traditional kafeneio. Our last stop will be Plaka, the impressive capital of Milos, overlooking the mouth of the port. With its narrow, paved alleys draped in bougainvillea blooms, snowy white houses, and cosmopolitan ambience, Plaka will reveal to you the very essence of Milos – and extract from you, we are certain, a promise to return one day to this incredibly special island.
