Description
Are you ready to meet the Wild West of Milos? Nearly half of this spectacular Cycladic island - the virgin western region that’s scored with rugged roads and abundant nature - is off-limits to most regular vehicles. But not our 4x4! Your experienced destination angel will pick you up from your hotel, headed for the western side of Adamas. Welcome to “raw” Milos: a Milos of unspoiled nature, striking old mines, and tucked away beaches, far from the crowds.
Before we leave civilization behind, we’ll drop by the salt fields of Milos, an impressive white lake right next to the airport, separated from the sea only by the main road. Your destination angel will then take you to the thermal waters of Adamas, where you can dip your toes and watch the water bubble at the beach. Finally, before we head west, there’s one last stop at the monument of the “14”, the famous WWII monument of Milos, where 14 local civilian men and boys were assassinated by the German army during WWII.
As we continue to the west, you’ll notice the landscape changing once you leave Adamas port and soon, you’ll be clicking away as you admire the sweeping panorama from Agia Marina, our first viewpoint. Next stop are the impressive old manganese mines of Cape Vani, on the north-west apex of Milos. With its immense monolith, Cape Vani was once the heart of the island’s booming mining industry and home to the many workers who toiled for decades under poor conditions, more than a century ago.
The abandoned site is now a dramatic mix of frontier land and Martian terrain; replete with caves, passages and mining relics – all waiting for the intrepid traveler to explore. After Vani, we’ll venture to the west coast for a refreshing swim at either Ammoudaraki, Triades or Agathia (or another of the virgin beaches that line this off-the-beaten-track slice of Milos). Golden sands and unbelievable waters will more than compensate for the bumpy jeep ride along the untamed hills of the west.
Now it’s time to set off for the interior of the bay, to the small settlement of Empourios: three houses, a windmill and a taverna fronting the waves; probably the best inside tip for a memorable lunch in Milos (you’re welcome). Don’t expect fine dining, but the feeling of sea spray around your ankles as you enjoy an authentic Melian lunch will be worth ten times more than fancy plates and gilded menus. As you leave the west behind, headed back to your hotel, you’ll be taking its wild beauty and secrets with you.
