Description
Your hiking experience starts in the main town of Ios, Chora. From here we will take a stroll through the island’s paved streets reaching the 12 traditional windmills of Ios, 3 of which are fully restored. The hiking trail ascending the hill leads to the Amphitheatre of Odysseus Elytis, a striking 1100-seats theatre that overlooks Chora.
Built to serve as a quintessential example of ancient Greek architecture, the impressive theater was named after the Greek Nobel laureate poet Odysseus Elytis. As we hike further up the traditional trail, we’ll pass by the 19th-century church of Agios Dimitrios.
On the way, your destination angel will be sharing historical facts as well as local stories and customs of the island, enriching your experience with intriguing insights.
Next stop, a family-run cheesery that produces authentic, traditional products, staying true to local recipes and cheesemaking methods. Situated in the northeastern side of Ios, this establishment is popular for its top-of-the-line culinary delights. Being a member of this very cheesery, your destination angel will take you on a tour around the facility’s outdoor area while one of the owners will share family stories and explain local customs that will give you a glimpse into everyday life on the island in the past. The cheesery’s old tools, the traditional cheese-making uniforms, and a stone wood-fired oven will complete the already quaint setting to take you on a journey back in time. Afterward, we’ll head to a charming, two-room stone house where you’ll have the chance to try 6 different types of cheese while your host unveils the secrets behind the art of cheesemaking. The cheese-tasting experience includes some of the most special Greek cheeses such as “skotiri”, a soft, white cheese made of goat and sheep milk spiced with black pepper that matures in sacks called “aski”. Finally, a visit to the animals’ farm, where you’ll have the chance to meet, pet and feed the animals that make it all possible, will be the grand finale of the first part of this incredible itinerary.
Our hiking experience ends as we make our way downhill to Ios town following once again the traditional path immersed by the panoramic views of Mylopotas Beach and the nearby islands.
