Description
How about a day spent hiking the “handcrafted” panoramic paths of Tinos; hopping between charming villages; and treating your tastebuds to the island’s legendary flavours - in the company of one of the most famous chefs of Tinos? Sounds pretty perfect to us too!
Gastronomy is a huge part of the Tinian identity, as you will discover. So too is the amazing network of hiking trails that criss-cross this chic Cycladic island, providing a wonderfully intimate mode of exploration.
Our hiking adventure embarks from the picturesque village of Kato Kleisma. Get ready to soak up splendid views of the largest plain in Tinos (between Komi and Kolimbithra) before we reach Aetofolia village.
Along the way, your destination angel will share some of the island’s most colourful stories and local customs and reveal why these paths are described as “handcrafted”. From Aetofolia, an old path leads to Kalloni, a well-preserved settlement of Tinos. Above Kalloni, Saint Ypokoi hoves into sight (in Greek, it means obedience). This striking old monastery has peered out over the valley of Livadi since the Middle Ages.
The final part of our walking route passes through Karkados village where we will admire a sweeping view from the “Little Pisa” of Tinos, an iconic local church with an ornamental bell tower that tilts off-centre. It’s time now to meet our acclaimed local chef and walk with him to the fields where he cultivates his homegrown produce.
Did you know that on self-sufficient Tinos, every household once grew their own livelihood on their own fields? Our chef will enlighten you about local crop farming traditions and techniques as you gather the fresh vegetables and raw ingredients for your meal. Then we’ll set off to a classic country home where he will demonstrate how to cook authentic Tinian and Greek recipes. Together you will prepare your feast in a wood oven and BBQ. Finally, your ultimate reward, as you sit down to a convivial 4-course meal, paired with local wine or raki, wrapped in the warm epicurean glow of the famous Tinian hospitality.
