Description
How about a day spent hiking the “handcrafted” panoramic paths of Tinos; hopping between charming villages; and treating your tastebuds to the island’s legendary flavours - in the company of one of the most famous cooks of Tinos? Sounds pretty perfect to us too! Gastronomy is a huge part of the Tinian identity, as you will discover. So too is the amazing network of hiking trails that criss-cross this chic Cycladic island, providing a wonderfully intimate mode of exploration.
Our hiking adventure embarks from the picturesque village of Volax. Are you ready to visit the remarkable lunar-like village of Volax (also known as Volakas)? You’ll be astonished at the sight of this geological phenomenon with houses hewn from giant boulders that appear to have dropped from the heavens, like meteorites. Here, the traditional occupation of the villagers is basket weaving. Let’s drop in on a basket making workshop and meet the craftsmen at work to discover the secrets behind this age-old art.
A passable path, passing through the picturesque village of Koumaros, leads to Mount Exombourgo, where the Venetian castle of the island was located. Along the way, your destination angel will share some of the island’s most colourful stories and local customs and reveal why these paths are described as “handcrafted”. Get ready to soak up splendid views of the plain in Tinos before we reach Tripotamos village. A downhill path will lead us to Tripotamos. It’s time now to meet our acclaimed local cook in her house. We’ll set off to a classic country home where she will demonstrate how to cook authentic Tinian and Greek recipes.
Together you will prepare your local meal. Finally, your ultimate reward, as you sit down to a convivial meal in a traditional backyard, paired with local wine or raki, wrapped in the warm epicurean glow of the famous Tinian hospitality. After lunch we will continue the downhill route, for about an hour to reach the town of Tinos.
