Location

You may not know its name. But I’ll bet you have most probably seen it in one of the many pictures promoting Switzerland. The stunning turquoise lake of Switzerland, surrounded by a crown of emerald forest and soothing alpine scenery. It is no other than Lake Caumasee in Flims, Grisons canton. Located 139 km from the centre of Zurich, you’ll struggle to find a more idyllic lake setting in Switzerland.

My point of view

I heard so many things about this lake from Swiss people, who are rightfully very proud of their natural treasure, that I confess to having had some reservations about whether Lake Caumasee could possibly live up to its hype. I therefore went with an open mind and was suitably impressed with the beautiful lake scenery I found there. So, I recommend you do the same: visit “the turquoise lake of Switzerland” without expectations and I am sure that the insane colour of the water will enchant you, just as it did me when I visited on a sunny day near the end of October and was captivated by its panoramic setting!

Discovering the lake

To visit Lake Caumasee you can either go by car, or by train until Chur and then by bus. I went by car and parked in the available space close to the lake. You approach the lake on a narrow, tree-lined path from which you can either walk all the way over to the lake, or you can take the funicular (there are two elevators that will get you there). The view from the cabin is fantastic: you’ll be treated to a beautiful panorama of the lake from above and all that lovely alpine scenery. Don’t forget to take a photo before you get into the lift.

Activities around the lake

The paths around the lake are ideal for hiking, walking and bicycling. Needless to say, as one of Switzerland’s most sought-out summer destinations for swimming and sunbathing, you’ll have to share Lake Caumasee with the crowds on a hot summer day if you fancy going for a dip in that beautiful turquoise water. If the thought of that doesn’t appeal, there are plenty of other water activities on offer at this lake for the whole family, such as paddle boarding, canoeing or pedalo, etc. Needless to say, during winter time, you can combine your ski experience with a visit to the snowy lake. The view spot is just amazing!

My recommendations

I consider the turquoise lake of Switzerland an impressive spectacle, worth visiting if you are in the broader area. I wouldn’t suggest it for summer swimming as it is likely to be very crowded, but it makes a great spot to explore and spend a relaxing hour or so walking around those photogenic waters and enjoying the wonderful fresh air. If you visit the turquoise lake of Switzerland during autumn, you will also get to soak up the amazing colours of the leaves!
