It’s beginning to look
a lot like summer

Endless Greek summers… inspired by the magical sun-soaked holidays of their childhood, Greeks eagerly count down the days until summer arrives again. Each year, when the summer season begins, certain sounds, smells, tastes and images bring those long idyllic Greek summers of my childhood immediately to mind.

Endless Greek Summer

Endless Greek summer… reliving those perfect summer holidays of their childhood, most Greeks can’t wait until summer arrives again each year. The schools close in the middle of June, (at least they did in a pre-lockdown world) but the most common holiday month for every Greek family is August. It is the month, when many working parents can take their vacations, so kids’ anticipation until August arrives is always sky high! Sounds, smells, tastes, pictures, which perfectly sync with the seemingly endless Greek summer, spring immediately to my mind each year, when the summer season begins. Later on, as adults, Greeks have the opportunity for several short weekend escapes to various Greek islands and do not wait for the long August summertime vacations.

Summer anticipation for Spetses

Every year from the end of May until the beginning to middle of June, I always experience the same anticipation: summer is here! Every year, there’s that same buzz; the same excitement! Even this year, where things will not be exactly the same anymore, due to the corona virus, the fizzy anticipation hasn’t changed a bit. My body still knows it’s summer! What comes first to my mind when it’s beginning to look like summer, is a short break to the island of Spetses, in the Saronic Gulf, approximately two and a half hours away from the port of Piraeus by speed boat.

Aghioi Anargyroi Beach

Specifically, it’s the feeling of one very special experience: Sun bathing and swimming until sunset at Aghioi Anargyroi beach, enjoying the ultimate Greek summer food of stuffed tomatoes with rice, perfectly paired with tangy feta cheese and a cold beer, under one of the beach’s umbrellas. Next to the beach, there is a taverna called Manolis. I can also satisfy my summer cravings for stuffed tomatoes there, along with delicious fresh fish and other traditional Greek dishes that you can eat in their mellow backyard.

The ultimate summer experience

The ultimate summer experience is lying on the sunbed, hearing the sound of the cicadas, a typical summer insect, eyeing the endless blue of the sea, swimming in the amazing crystal-clear waters and enjoying a late Greek-style lunch that stretches out lazily into the afternoon. After finishing your lunch, you can indulge in one of the calmest power naps by the sea and later on, you will feel refreshed and energized for your evening swim.

Τhis feeling of relaxation

When it begins to look like summer, I can easily summon this heady feeling of relaxation to my mind. It’s like I am already hearing the sound of those cicadas, smelling those delicious stuffed tomatoes, tasting the cold beer, feeling the salty sea water of Aghioi Anargyroi beach on my body.

Stay tuned to find out more about the picturesque island of Spetses!
