Milos island is so spoiled for wonderful beaches in remarkable landscapes, it’s a real challenge to name the most beautiful one to lay your towel on! One of my favourite organised beaches on Milos is Firiplaka, in the southern part of this horseshoe-shaped Cycladic island. Firiplaka is a curving sweep of volcanic beach, set dramatically against jagged pink and white cliffs.

The beach

The first section of the beach is organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, a small scattering of cabanas and a beach bar. The second part is unorganised, which means you can just plant your pareo in the sunshine and simply enjoy swimming and sunbathing as nature intended. Everything about Firiplaka beach in Milos is marvellous - from the gold sands, the glassy waters and the sandy bottom of the sea (which always makes for a more graceful entrance than when there are stones beneath your feet!) to the striking colour of the rocks that slice against the blue skies above you – and last but not least, the expertly-mixed mojitos of the beach bar.

Tips for the beach

The beach is quite big but in order to snare a sunbed, or ideally one of the very few cabanas, you should hit Firiplaka beach early in the morning. The beach is 12km from Adamantas, the port of Milos, and you can go by bus (it’s a 5-minute walk from the bus stop), but ideally you should rent a car when on Milos to get the most out of your visit. The earlier you get to Firiplaka, the easier it will be to land a parking space closer to the beach also (take it from me!)

My beloved experience

I love spending the whole day at this gorgeous beach, in one the cabanas, sipping on a mojito, enjoying a snack and unwinding without a care in the world until the happy hour when the sun goes down! The colours are even more amazing at sunset. One of the reasons that makes this beach so special is the colourful volcanic rocks which surround it. It is also considered to be an ideal beach for swimming under north winds. Firiplaka beach in Milos is an absolute must if you are visiting Milos. Take a deep dive for me too!
