OFF-ROAD SKIATHOS DISCOVERY

 

Did someone mention wine? Next we will taste the local grape varieties at an island winery before heading to the alluring medieval Kastro (Castle) in the old city of Skiathos. There, an imaginary voyage back in time awaits: a glance into the troubled times of islanders during the 13th and 14th centuries, when Kastro provided shelter and safety against the marauding pirates who terrorised the Aegean. As we scale this rocky outcrop, we’ll encounter many old and picturesque churches before we stroll around the castle for approximately 30 minutes.

 

Your destination angel will share stories about the local legend Alexandros Papadiamantis, the “patron saint of modern Greek literature” as he is known. Fun Fact. Locals still regularly visit the ruins of the church to read from the works of Papadiamantis, along with the abbot, until sunset. The views from the top of the Castle are mesmerising. You can see the nearby islands of Skopelos and Alonissos and, if the weather is clear, sometimes even monumental Mount Athos.

 

We’ll continue along a dirt road through verdant untamed forest to reach our next stop, Kechria beach. It’s time for a quick dip to relish the glassy waters on one of the most celebrated beaches of Skiathos, before dining on Greek delicacies at a traditional taverna. Back in our jeep, we’ll venture from the northern reaches of Skiathos to the west; passing the Monastery of Kounistra. You’re sure to love the drive to Mandraki and the “picture-perfect” bays of Elias and Xerxes. In 480 BC, the fleet of the great Persian King Xerxes struck the shores of Skiathos after being hit by lightning, giving this ravishing swimming spot its memorable name.

 

Our final stop will be the famous Koukounaries beach. Plant your towel on one of the Mediterranean’s most exquisite long sandy beaches, framed by a vivid expanse of green, and relax for a spell before we begin the return leg of this captivating off-road safari.
