NATURAL WONDERS, ANCIENT SITES AND WARTIME TALES IN RAFINA

Now to the ancient past. “Askitario” is a Bronze Age acropolis (3,000 B.C.) on the trianglular hill of Crocodile. If you are good at math, you will figure out that it is twice the age of the Athens Acropolis. On one side is a rugged and rocky cliff; on the other lies the long sandy beach of Marikes. This is where we will head to encounter protected Mediterranean flora (such as seagrass Posidonia oceanica) and the geological formation named “beach rock”.

 

We’ll soak up the splendid views, while we learn about this vital ecosystem and observe the human presence from antiquity to today. We will also stroll the shores of Filippa beach to scout for marine fossils, as we become "paleontologists" for a spell, uncovering the ancient environment of Rafina, 5 million years ago!
