Description
If hiking is the way you love to go, this is the experience for you. And a hike is not a hike unless you discover things along the way, always with the knowledgeable guidance and storytelling of your destination angel. Your immersion into the nature and lifestyle of the island will begin at St. Konstantinos (Platanakia) from where we will walk up to traditional mountain village of Manolates.
Imagine bright, freshly whitewashed streets, where peace is as loud as the cicadas in August. Cobblestone streets, old stone homes, shady squares, and sunflowers dominate this village nestled in the crevices of Mount Karvouni, surrounded by vineyards and lush vegetation. This fairytale village leads us to some of the most beautiful hiking paths of Samos. Cypress, plane, and pine trees rustle in the breeze, and streams trinkle down the hills as you walk from one wonderland to the next. If you’re a birdwatcher, you’re in luck, the thick vegetation of the area makes it a perfect home for ravens, eagles, crows, jays, owls, sparrows, and even nightingales. You’ll hear their song even if you don’t spot them. Oh, and did we mention that all this comes with views of the sea?
From here we trek back in time to a village founded in the 16th century. Vourliotes, another picturesque mountain settlement, is home to about 500 people, whose ancestors came from an area in Asia Minor called Vourlos, where its name originated as “Vourliotes” means they who are from Vourlos. Narrow streets, old houses with colourful doors, small churches and flowers everywhere, surrounded by olive groves and pine trees, is the way this car-free village rolls.
After all this walking, it’s time for food. We will take a seat at the local taverna, where the owner and his wife will bake local specialties in a wood-burning oven, just for us. A traditional Samos cheese pie and “boureki” are on the menu. If you’re wondering what a “boureki” is, we’ll give you a taste: it’s savoury, it involves pumpkin, feta, mint and onions, and comes shaped in a coil. You must try it.
Our last stop will be in the seaside village of Tsampou and its magnificent beach of white pebbles and deep blue waters. But we won’t go to where others trod. To the side of this large paradise lies a smaller Eden, one where you’re almost alone and free to soak up the sound of the waves hitting the shore and swim away any worry that you may have left.
