Description
Greek agriculture (and cuisine) is synonymous with olive oil. And for olive oil production goes hand in hand with olive tree cultivation. And both are a life-line in Kythira as the island is well-known for its top-of-the-line organic olive oil. Our immersion into this world will begin with an olive oil tasting in the village of Karavas. Located in the north of the island, this village is made up of a multitude of hillside settlements, intertwined with olive groves, lush vegetation and ravines. Here you will be introduced to a local producer who knows all there is to know about olive oil. His 800 olive trees produce an unforgettable annual yield. You will of course have the chance to walk through a grove and taste several selections of oil.
We will then head on to the local bakery, the Karavas Bakery, where its friendly owner Pavlos, will tell you all about the local “paksimadia” or rusks, that are made using…you guessed it…olive oil. Rusks are well-known local products and can be used to replace bread, top salads or crunched on as a healthy snack. Around midday, it’s lunch ‘o’clock. We will head over to the local taverna, Lemonokipos (lemon garden) with sweeping views of the village hills.
Here we will feast on a variety of local dishes that’ll have you begging for the recipes. After lunch, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. A pleasant 15-minute drive will lead us to Aloizianika, where you will attend your olive oil workshop. Olive oil is used for things beyond cooking, and here you will learn how to make your own soap with it, adding herbs and flowers from the garden of the workshop. This is a very old tradition and technique, used ages before mass produced soap bars came around. Apart from the intoxicating aroma, the herbs you use also have a healing power. You will obviously get to take your soap with you, as a memorable souvenir of your holiday and your efforts.
