Description
Follow in the footsteps of your destination angel as they lead you on a private 10km hike through northern Kythira, much influenced by the British rule of the late 19th century. We will begin our journey in Karavas, a village of ravines, green hills and flowing fresh water springs. Its name comes from the Greek word for “boat” because before its lighthouse was built, many boats crashed on the rocks below it. We will walk through the lush valleys and come across one of the largest springs, Amir Ali, where butterflies flutter their wings and birds sing their song. Portokalia (named after a huge orange tree that used to stand there) and Kryoneri (cold water) springs also await us.
After frolicking through this unspoilt nature, we will head north to visit some (not-so-spooky) impressive caves. To cool off, we’ll head down to the Bay of Agios Nikolaos, where we will swim in the deep blue waters and make a pitstop for some refreshments and a bite of Kythirian rusks and dried fruit. An uphill walk along a footpath will lead us to the tallest lighthouse in the Aegean Sea. Built by the British in 1857, it used to be run on oil until 1984 when electricity took over.
The Moudari Lighthouse is 25 meters tall and stands on the norther most tip of the island, offering incredible views. Climb up and see for yourself. The structure that you see just below it is the old signal house where ships were communicated with by the use of special flags. After all this climbing and hiking, it’s time for food. We will head to Platia Ammos, a small and quiet seaside village with a large beach. Overlooking the sea, you will feast on delicious local “mezedes” (dishes to share) and crave your thirst with chilled drinks and refreshments. A taxi will bring you back to where we started, the village of Karavas.
